Scrapped Crash Bandicoot wumpa minigame on the loading screens

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex had a scrapped minigame that has been revealed for the first time thanks to Xhaos.

In the September 11, 2001 prototype released to the public yesterday, there was a minigame on the loading screens! In this minigame, Crash Bandicoot is falling while Wumpa fruit rain down. The goal is to collect as many Wumpa fruit as you can while avoiding the eaten ones, and collecting eaten fruit makes you lose three fruits. The wumpa you collect in the minigame gets added to your tally when the level starts.

At the last minute, Konami requested its removal to avoid legal issues with Namco, who had a patent on loading screen minigames. Unfortunately, this fun little feature never made it to the final game, and we were stuck with long loading times. But thanks to this prototype’s release on June 24th, 2024, we get a glimpse of what could have been!

This version of the game is not dongle protected and can be played on the PCSX2 emulator.
